The Presentation:

At the national, state, and local level, there are strong pushes for improvements in the energy efficiency of building construction.  The AIA has endorsed the 2030 Challenge calling for new buildings in 2010 to use 60% less energy than the average existing building.  The Governor's Climate Action Team and the Mayor's Green Ribbon Panel have both made recommendations for a 30% improvement in energy efficiency in the next Energy Code updates.  With that context, the 2009 Energy Codes are starting to take shape.  Earlier in 2009, the Washington State Building Code Council (WSBCC) began the process for adoption of the 2009 Washington State Energy Code (WSEC).  That culminated with the WSBCC adopting the 2009 WSEC in November 2009, likely to take effect in July 2010.  Come hear about proposed changes in criteria for the building envelope, mechanical systems, and lighting systems.  Learn about the menu option in new Chapter 9 for single-family residential buildings.  (While the Seattle Energy Code development process did not begin until after the WSBCC completed the State process, there will also be some discussion of ideas being considered for the Seattle Energy Code, such as those proposed for the 2010 version of ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1 and the 2012 version of the IECC.)

The Presentor:

John Hogan is the Senior Energy Code Analyst for the Seattle Department of Planning and Development, where he has been writing and implementing Energy Codes for over 28 years.  In addition to Seattle, John also participates in State, regional, national, and international work on Energy Codes and standards.

John is a member of the Washington State Energy Code Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and is active on a variety of ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers) committees.  He is also is active in the IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) development process and is a member of the ICC (International Code Council) Energy Certification Exam Committee. John served on the Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group (EA TAG) for the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council). He is a licensed architect, registered mechanical engineer, and LEED Accredited Professional.
