"KEEPING ON-TRACK AT
WSDOT"
This months presentation will
provide an insight to the Project Controls and Reporting tools and methods
of the Washington State Department of Transportation along with a brief
introduction of some of the larger projects underway, issues and answers to
implementing schedule and cost controls at WSDOT, and an overview of WSDOT's
Gray Notebook, a quarterly report on
numerous aspects of WSDOT performance.
Rick Smith,
Director of Project Control and Reporting for the Urban Corridors Office of
the Washington State Department of Transportation, is responsible for
implementation and oversight of project controls and project management
systems for several very large transportation projects, including the Alaska
Way Viaduct, SR-520 Floating Bridge, and the I-405 Program. Prior to this
position, he was Director of Innovative Project Delivery at WSDOT. He led
WSDOT’s initial development of Design-Build protocol, working with
contractors, consultants, and agency specialty groups, and was also
responsible for overall agency Design-Build policy. Prior to that, he was
Director of Planning and Programming for WSDOT. Rick is a member of the TRB
and AASHTO task forces on Design-Build, member of an AASHTO subcommittee on
Project Delivery, and served for a year as a member of FHWA’s Accelerated
